Sensitive teeth: causes and solutions
Why are your teeth sensitive?
Dental sensitivity shows as a brief but intense pain on contact with hot, cold, sweet or acidic food.
It can be caused by:
- enamel erosion, from an acidic diet or brushing that is too aggressive;
- receding gums, which expose the dentine;
- untreated cavities or cracks;
- bruxism — teeth grinding — which gradually wears down the enamel.
How to relieve and prevent sensitivity
Use a suitable toothpaste — it contains desensitising agents that reduce pain.
Brush properly — gently, with a soft brush, without pressing hard.
Limit acidic food and drink — fizzy drinks, citrus fruit and vinegar weaken the enamel.
Protect your teeth at night — if you grind your teeth, a night guard may be necessary.
